![]() ![]() I always enjoy telling people about how when I was a graduate student I first discovered the murder ballads that prompted my first historical novel, A Murder at Rosamund’s Gate, but the reality is it took me a very long time before I began to write that story. I spent eight years working on a PhD in European history, and a few more years after that as an assistant professor of history. My made it moment may be a little different than that of other authors Jenny has so generously hosted on her blog. Why wasn’t I succeeding? Susanna’s secret–that sounds like a title for a novel!–had different origins, but when she finally let it go the same thing happened for her that does for us all. How many of us have kept this passion of ours secret, at least for a while? I certainly did, and I can admit now that it came from a sense of shame. In any case, I think the words below will speak to anyone who ever questioned his or her “right to write”. Perhaps there is no such thing as convention when it comes to this writing life. Susanna Calkins has an unconventional path to publication, and an unconventional Moment. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Facilitator’s Guide explains in detail how to plan, promote, and present the study. It would be easy to let this become a four page essay or word by word deconstruction of this novella length read – under 200 pages. ![]() Let’s turn that around though and go back to the interpretation, which is always written by the above and interpreted in a way that suits the narrative. – Probably explains why no civilisation ever learns from history. So my position is perhaps unusual: I am at once very respectful and completely impious. I am deeply respectful of religion, but I believe none of its supernatural aspects. And we forget because the modern secular world always thinks that it is enough to tell someone something once (be good, remember the poor etc.) But all religions disagree here: they insist that if anyone is to stand a chance of remembering anything, they need reminders on a daily, perhaps even hourly basis.
